Whiteley’s: A Journey Through Time and a New Chapter Ahead

Over the past 15 months, we've had the privilege of working on a truly remarkable project.

For born and bred Londoners, especially those north of the river, Whiteley’s in Queensway might bring back fond memories. This iconic building, once a grand department store, has stood tall since 1911, weaving itself into the fabric of the city’s history.  With a storied past, Whiteley’s boasted the tagline in Victorian times: “Everything from a pin to an elephant”—all under one roof! For over a century, it has been a showstopper, a jewel among London’s architectural treasures.  It’s a testament to craftsmanship and elegance rarely seen in modern construction.

For me, Whiteley’s is more than just a historic building—it’s deeply personal. It was the first shopping centre I visited as a teen (aside from Brent Cross, which, let’s face it, was never quite as inspiring!). Whiteley’s was grand and luxurious, its expansive spaces and ornate details leaving an indelible impression.  For so many Londoners, it was more than a shopping destination. It was ‘the’ place to watch a film as a tween or teen—a cinema in a shopping centre was groundbreaking at the time! It was also the ideal pit stop before or after ice skating at the nearby rink, the only one north of the river.  Later in life, Whiteley’s became a favorite lunch spot during my days as a knitwear designer in Paddington Basin. When I became a parent, it was the perfect destination for long buggy walks, helping me navigate those early months with my baby.

Whiteley’s isn’t just bricks and mortar—it’s a collection of memories for so many. That’s why it has been such a privilege to play a role in its latest chapter: a thoughtful transformation into luxury homes, retail spaces, and a Six Senses hotel. Though the delays have been significant, we’ve never tired of the project and can’t wait to see our vision come to life.

Creating a beautiful family home here has been a labour of love, and we’re thrilled to share it with its new owners. Stay tuned for more updates as this storied building begins its next era! The new look Whiteley’s Residence.
